I want to…

delete hundreds of emails without the hassle

Connect Gmail to Claude, tell it what to delete, and check the list before it touches anything.

// THE SHORT ANSWER

Connect your Gmail to Claude and describe in one sentence which emails to clear. Claude finds them, shows you the list, and moves them to Trash when you say go.

Who it's for
Anyone whose Gmail is full of email they'll never read: business owners, freelancers, real estate agents, accountants. It also works for clearing one source at a time, like job alerts or receipts from one store.
Level
Beginner, you don't need to code or install anything, only connect your Gmail to Claude
Cost
You need a Claude account. The Gmail connector also works on the free plan: we tried it on a free account on 25 September 2026, even though the connector's own page says Pro and above. My 203-conversation cleanup ran on the Max plan; I haven't tried a cleanup that large on the free plan, which has lower usage limits. If you run into them, Pro costs 20 dollars a month, or 17 a month billed yearly.

STEP BY STEPFrom an inbox with thousands of emails to a full Trash, without selecting them one by one

  1. Open Claude's connectors page

In claude.ai or the Claude app, go to Customize, then Connectors. Customize is the page that holds your connectors.

  2. Connect Gmail and accept every permission

Find Gmail in the list and select Connect. Google's screen opens: sign in and accept every permission it asks for. If you leave one unchecked, Claude connects but can't read or delete anything, and you only find out when you ask it to do something. When it works, Gmail shows a check mark instead of the Connect button.

    IN MY TEST

The first time, it connected but the first search failed with the error "Insufficient scope": it had no permission to read. I fixed it by disconnecting Gmail in Claude, connecting it again, and accepting every permission. (25 September 2026, the same connector driven from Claude Code.)

  3. Start a new chat

Start a new chat from the sidebar. In my test, Claude used Gmail as soon as the connector was connected. If it doesn't search your email, select the + in the message box and check that Gmail is turned on.

  4. Decide what to clear

Pick one source at a time: a sender (LinkedIn), a type (promotions), or one store. "Clean my inbox" is too open. "Every LinkedIn email from the last year" gives it a clear boundary and a list you can check.

    • LinkedIn
    • promotions
    • job alerts
    • newsletters you stopped reading

prompt · what to clear and what to leave alone

Search my Gmail for every email from [what to clear: LinkedIn, promotions, one store, one newsletter] [how far back: from the last year, before 2025, all of them]. Before you delete anything, tell me how many you found and show me 10 examples with sender and subject. Don't touch emails from real people or emails with attachments. When I say "go", move them to Trash and tell me how many you cleared.

The prompt asks Claude to count first, show you examples, and wait for your answer. That way you see what it will delete before it deletes anything. The rule about real people protects the email that matters.

  5. Paste the prompt and fill in the fields

Copy the prompt above, replace the parts in brackets, and send it. Claude searches your email and answers with how many it found and ten examples.

  6. Check the list before you say go

Read the examples. If something you want to keep shows up, tell Claude and ask it to leave that out. This is the one point where you decide. After "go", Claude works on its own.

  7. Say "go" and let it work

Claude moves the emails to Trash one conversation at a time. In my test, 203 conversations took about 6 minutes, so you can leave it working and do something else. When it finishes, it tells you how many it cleared.

    IN MY TEST

I asked for every LinkedIn email from the last 3 months. It found 203 conversations, left out messages from real people and emails with attachments, and moved them to Trash in about 6 minutes. (25 September 2026, in the Claude desktop app.)

  8. Check Trash in Gmail

Open Gmail and go to Trash. The emails Claude cleared are there. If one shouldn't have gone, open it and use Move to Inbox. Gmail empties Trash on its own after 30 days.

  9. Find the next pile to clear

Repeat with another source: receipts from one store, notifications from an app you stopped using, old job alerts. Something I haven't tested yet: the connector can also move emails out of your inbox without deleting them, or label them, if you'd rather keep them.
